Countdown Begins to 'BEST'

With only four weeks to go, golf fever is taking over Northern Ireland. The first ever George Best Celebrity Golf Invitational is taking place at Galgorm Castle Golf Club, Ballymena, on Sunday 6th July.

Gary McCausland is welcomed by Barbara McNarry, of the George Best Foundation, as he jets in to Northern Ireland for a quick golf practice ahead of the George Best Celebrity Golf Invitational, on Sunday 6 July 2008.  The weekend spectacular will be open to the general public and will be supported by a host of celebrities from the world of television and sport.The event, in aid of the George Best Foundation, will involve 30 celebrities including Mike England, Willie Thorne, Robert Powell, Gary Webster, Coronation Street stars Trevor Dwyer-Lynch and Alan Halsall in addition to number of our own home grown stars including Denis Taylor and Gary McCausland. The four ball invitational, three players each teamed-up with a celebrity, will tee off from 10.30am and enjoy a cracking game of golf on the stunning Galgorm Course.

Members of the public are not only invited along to watch the stars, drive, putt or perhaps even slice or hook their shots on the course, but can also enjoy a fantastic Family Fun Day in the grounds of Galgorm Castle. The action packed day, from 11.00am – 5.00pm, will include inflatable Sumo suits, falconry, assault courses, tractor show, archery, putting green and football shoot-out to name just a few. A number of refreshments stalls will offer a variety of food and beverages to ensure the tastes of young and old are catered for in addition to a number of arts & crafts stalls to browse and buy from.

The George Best Museum and exhibition in Galgorm Castle, with extensive memorabilia from George's glittering football career is set to be a must for any Manchester United and George Best fan. Several items have never been on show before, including George's Mini, now rescued and restored in addition to his football boots which had been kept by Pat Jennings for decades and extensive family memorabilia including the shirt that George swapped in the 1968 European cup final.

All proceeds from the day will go to the George Best Foundation, which provides charitable funds for research into liver disease and alcoholism, as well as supporting the promotion of a healthy lifestyle among young people through participation in soccer.
