Northern Ireland’s image to the rest of the world has not always been a positive or inviting one, with a bitter civil war blighting the country over many years.
However, the power of sport in forging a national identity for a country at times split due to religious divide has been immeasurable.
Although some fantastically gifted football players have originated from ‘Norn Iron’ over the decades, George Best’s name remains iconic and his origins are a real source of collective pride for today’s 1.8 million inhabitants.
To mark the 10th anniversary of his death on Wednesday 25th November, a new range of George Best clothing has been launched.
The range, which will carry the George Best branding and style DNA, includes leather jackets in seven different styles as well as shirts, jeans, belts, trousers and sports jackets. In a deal brokered by IMG, the exclusive worldwide licensing representative of George Best, the clothing has been developed and designed in Cork, Ireland, by local fashion designer Siobhán O’Connell, in conjunction with the Best family.
Available in fashion stores throughout Ireland and the UK and online at georgebestclothing.com from next year, the products will cater for 15-year-old males and upwards, with the leather jackets featuring the George Best signature in red embroidery available first.
Future plans include rolling the commemorative range out globally.

The producers of George Best : The Movie, scheduled for release in late 2016 or 2017, have revealed the first details about the plot of the film.
The movie, being made by Renaissance Films, will be the first of its kind made about legendary footballer George Best, combining archive footage of the Best in later life with live action sequences with an actor playing George as a young man. The interplay between the younger years and the older George as captured by the cameras will aim to reveal new insight into the life and experiences of the player some call the best ever.
One of George Best’s team-mates from his playing days at Manchester United has spoken out regarding his support for the movie to be made about his old friend.
“I think it’s fantastic”, remarks Paddy before going on to lament the lack of great movies about football players.
Paddy was appearing at the launch event for the crowdfunding campaign to raise the budget for the movie to be made, which took place at Old Trafford. The interview clip can be seen here :
You can be a part of making this movie happen. Go to www.tifosy.com/best and contribute now, and choose a reward in return for your contribution. Let’s help make this amazing film become a reality and bring George Best to the Silver Screen.
George Best, considered one of the greatest footballers in the history of the game. A Manchester United, Northern Ireland and footballing legend.
Now, with the help of crowdfunding, Renaissance Films are looking to produce George Best: The Movie, and have started by launching a campaign to raise £500,000 through Tifosy needed to make it happen.
This means you can contribute to telling the story of a footballing legend.
Best was part of the United squad that won their first European Cup back in 1968, having signed with the club at the age of 15 and making his debut at 17. Part of the ‘Busby Babes’, the 37-time Northern Ireland international would destroy defences with his dribbling ability. Think Lionel Messi, but on pitches far less smoother than today.
Renaissance Films want the younger generation who didn’t see George Best in his day to re-live his life with the production of a movie on his life. Through Tifosy, an Italian company, they are looking to raise the half-a-million pounds in order to fund the making.
You can watch a short introductory here of what the movie will be about:
Tifosy believe that crowdfunding has a place in football, especially if there is a meaningful reward for the fans in return. Portsmouth football club raised £250,000 through the ‘fan funding’ website to have two academy pitches built.
The South coast club have suffered greatly over the past few years since the ecstasy of winning the 2008 FA Cup. Now playing fourth-tier football largely due to serious financial problems that nearly put the club out of business completely, they are using the likes of Tifosy to rebuild the club.
Other clubs that the Italian company have been involved in include: Parma, Juventus, FC Porto, Club Bruges and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
With this in mind, we’re sure that many of you will be excited to contribute to the possible George Best movie and support Renaissance Films in their quest to make it happen.
Why have they turned to crowdfunding? Whilst it is becoming more and more commonplace across the globe now, especially popular in the United States, the company simply cannot afford the funds they need to cover casting costs, archive footage, filming etc. and are looking for fans to help.
There are also rewards for contributing. Depending on the amount you donate, you can receive an official movie poster, 2 free tickets to the London premiere or even be a featured extra!

No other imposed himself so completely onto the romantic imagination. No other was so emblematic of the era during which he flourished. And no other will ever be as memorable as George Best.
On the field, Best’s skills were sublime and almost other-worldly. Off it, he had a magnetic appeal. He was treated like a pop icon and a pin up; a fashion model and a sex symbol. Every man envied him and every woman adored him.
With approval from Barbara Best, and to mark the 50th anniversary of his debut for Manchester United, Duncan Hamilton examines Best’s crowded life and premature death. But most importantly, Hamilton presents Best at his glorious peak – the precocious goals, the labyrinthine runs, the poise and balletic balance, and the body swerves.
This is George Best: footballing immortal.
